ISDN Advantages
Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) is changing the way we live, learn, and work. ISDN uses existing telephone lines to carry voice, data, and video signals simultaneously. Communication is faster, more accurate, and more affordable.
ISDN for Norstar
Norstar offers businesses the ability to create an end-to-end digital connection with ISDN lines.
- The Compact ICS supports ISDN Basic Rate Interface (BRI).
- The Modular ICS supports ISDN BRI plus ISDN Primary Rate Interface (PRI), for even greater bandwidth and speed.
What Can ISDN Do?
Businesses with Norstar systems can take advantage of the many ISDN applications now available to reduce communication costs, improve employee productivity, and enhance customer service.
- For Internet Access...
ISDN dramatically cuts the wait time for downloading pages and files. There's less frustration, higher employee productivity, and lower Internet access costs.
- For Telecommuting...
ISDN makes this a realistic option for many businesses. Each worker can easily stay in touch through high-speed access to shared information resources, voice calls, e-mail, and desktop videoconferencing -- all without installing a separate data line.
- For Video and Desktop Conferencing...
With the growing number of video and screen share applications available, ISDN helps make meetings more productive and cuts travel expenses.
- For Local Area Network (LAN) Bridging...
ISDN replaces expensive dedicated lines with a high-speed dial-up connection. Users can access centralized database information and on-line applications as needed, and download or transfer files -- yet pay only for actual transmission times.
- For Voice...
ISDN provides a clearer, more reliable connection and enhances the Norstar Modular ICS with features like instantaneous Caller ID.
How does ISDN work?
ISDN lines are made up of separate channels, which transmit information simultaneously. These include:
- B (Bearer) channels, which can be used to carry a voice conversation, high-speed data flow, or an image.
- D (Data) channel, which carries control and signaling information.
What is BRI?
ISDN Basic Rate Interface provides three communications channels (2B+D). Data can be transmitted at speeds of up to 128 kbps -- four times faster than a 28.8 analog modem.
In many cases, a single BRI line can replace two analog lines, giving you a single access number for all your voice, fax, and data transfer applications.
What is PRI?
ISDN Primary Rate Interface lines consist of 24 separate channels (23B+D). At speeds of up to 1.54 mbps, PRI is ideal for video applications as well as voice and data transfer.
Compared with fixed T1 lines or analog trunks, PRI can boost efficiency by 20 percent and offers a faster connect time, clearer voice connection, and virtually error-free data transfer. PRI also delivers Caller ID information instantaneously, making it ideal for Computer Telephony Integration (CTI) and Call Center applications.
