Meridian 1 Networking

OverviewNortel Meridian 1 Networking Diagram

Nortel exemplifies networking leadership by delivering networking solutions that allow the opportunity to decrease communication costs while improving efficiency and management control of communication systems. Network solutions can be simple off-premise extensions, or very sophisticated to accommodate complex networking requirements for a large corporation. Meridian 1 networking solutions can be implemented for initial requirements or added later to accommodate future growth.

Key Features:
  • Electronic Switched Network (ESN): Allows a company to create and control a flexible network for communication among company locations and the public network.
  • Meridian 1 Remote Services: Offer products such as Fiber Remote, Fiber Remote Multi-IPE, Carrier Remote, Mini Carrier Remote, Line-side T1 Interface, and Off-Premise Station (OPS) Analog Line Card—designed to extend the value and power of the Meridian 1 to the entire organization and to provide the best return on investment.
  • Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN): Provides integrated voice and data capability and advanced network applications for enhanced digital networks.

Benefits:

  • Electronic Switched Network (ESN):
    • ESN allows tying of separate corporate communications systems into one and share common network features and functionalities within a private communications network.
    • ESN helps optimize the cost and performance objectives of the telecommunications systems. And since many private networks have grown in a rather disjointed fashion, with each office being responsible for the installation of local trunks and special service trunks to handle local and long distance calls for their own users.
      • This results in an inefficient network with too many trunks, some of which are not being fully utilized. An effective network can cut cost by centralization of trunks, least-cost routing and control of calls.
    • Centralization of facilities can benefit a company greatly since cost savings can be gained by allowing users at several locations to share in the use of these facilities.
  • Meridian 1 Remote Services:
    • Whether a business is spread across a campus or multiple geographic locations, the Meridian 1 Remote Services portfolio provides the optimal solution to meet remote communication needs.
    • Besides using Meridian 1's powerful ISDN capabilities to link multiple locations, the option to choose among a flexible range of remote service products is also available.
      • These products include Fiber Remote, Fiber Remote Multi-IPE, Carrier Remote, Line-Side T1 Interface, and Off-Premise Station (OPS) Analog Line Card.
      • Each remote solution is designed to extend the value and power of the Meridian 1 to the entire organization and to provide the best return on investment.
  • Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN):
    • The most advanced networking technologies are found today within Nortel's powerful integrated voice and data networks.
    • An integral component of the Meridian 1 product line, these powerful networks deliver proven solutions for both simple and complex information and communication needs.
    • ISDN is a global networking strategy based on international standards.
    • ISDN standards specify two basic services:
      • Primary Rate Interface (PRI):
        • In North America, PRI operates at 1.544 Mbps and consists of 23 B channels and one 64 Kbps D channel.
        • Meridian 1 and ISDN PRI provide access to local exchange carriers through Nortel's DMS-100 switch and AT&T 5ESS.
        • It provides access to inter-exchange carriers like MCI and U.S. Sprint using the Nortel DMS-250 switch and AT&T's 4ESS switch, and to private network nodes such as Meridian 1 systems.
        • For customers outside of North America, Nortel's Meridian 1 offers multi-national customers the ability to access other public exchanges internationally.
        • International ISDN PRI provides connectivity to public exchanges, such as Ericcson AXE-10 in Australia and Sweden, Alcatel's System 12 in Norway, Siemens' EWSD in Germany, Alcatel's E10 in France and D70 in Japan.
        • Nortel's Meridian 1 extends ISDN PRI features beyond networking access and control to a new level of feature-rich applications designed to increase productivity and reduce costs. Implementing ISDN PRI features and services across the network provides the opportunity for corporations to integrate geographically dispersed locations so that all sites act as if they were a single location.
        • This is possible by employing such features as Calling Line Identification, Call Party Name Display, Call Redirection and Ring Again, throughout the Meridian 1 network.
        • ISDN PRI also supports any combination of voice or data calls, allowing for the integration of previously separate networks.
        • Calls can be designated as voice and/or data on a per call basis, eliminating dedicated leased-line requirements.
        • Elimination of private, dedicated leased lines and associated modems for data translates directly in reduced telecommunications costs and maintenance costs in addition to providing a communications network that's easy to manage.
      • Basic Rate Interface (BRI):
        • ISDN Basic Rate Interface (BRI) on the Meridian 1 system allows delivery of an end-to-end, standard-adherent digital connection to the desktop.
        • As a result, voice and data communications can be sent and received more reliably and at a higher rate of speed.
        • The introduction of ISDN BRI for Meridian 1 represents the next major step in the evolution toward ISDN.
        • BRI operates at 144Kbps and consists of two 64Kbps Bearer channels (B-channels) and one 16 Kbps signaling channel (D-channel).
        • This 2B+D connection is known as a Digital Subscriber Loop (DSL).
        • The key differentiation for the Meridian 1 ISDN BRI product is its adherence to national and international standards.
        • Meridian 1 BRI adheres to the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and National ISDN standards. Specifically, ISDN BRI implementation into Meridian 1 software is in accordance with relevant ITU standards at the physical, datalink, and network layers of the International Standards Organization's Open System Interconnect model.
        • Feature activation is supported using standards-based supplemental service elements.
        • For customers in multi-vendor environments, choosing an appropriate application terminal can be unnecessarily confusing.
        • Adherence to a single, international standard allows equipment and application vendors to develop a single product, thus simplifying the customer's decision-making process.
    • ISDN introduces powerful new features and services to further enhance network performance to achieve even greater system flexibility.
