WinPoET™ End User FAQS

Who is responsible for customer support - Ironton Telephone Company or Wind River?

Although Wind River is the manufacturer of WinPoET™, Ironton Telephone Company will provide the technical support and customer service.

Can I download the WinPoET™ software directly from the Wind River web site?

No. WinPoET cannot be downloaded from the manufacturer - it must be obtained from Ironton Telephone Company.

I need WinPoET™ to bind to a particular NIC now, but may need to change it later. Will I have to do a complete uninstall/re-install?

No. Since WinPoET™ binds itself to all NICs, you will not need to make that change later. However, if you have added adapters since the original installation of WinPoET™, you must uninstall and re-install WinPoET™.

During the install process, must I specify to WinPoET™ which adapter is being used to connect to the Internet?

No. In order to simplify installation, WinPoET™ binds itself to all installed adapters.

Does WinPoET™ support multiple sessions?

Yes. It does support multiple sessions on the same NIC in the Windows NT® environment, but not over multiple NICs. In the current Windows NT® version, the WinPoET™ installation .inf file adds two lines that can be modified to establish multiple sessions.

Is WinPoET™ compatible with Internet software?

WinPoET™ is compatible if the software works with a Windows® PPP adapter.

Does WinPoET™ work with a proxy?

Yes. It is integrated into Windows Dial-Up Networking and should work with any standards-based proxy.

Is WinPoET™ compatible with a dual processor computer?

Version 2.0 or higher is compatible - contact Ironton Telephone Company for a software upgrade.

While using WinPoET™ on my Windows® NT machine, I received the following error message: "Initialization of the dynamic link library C:\WINNT\System32\rasman.dell failed. The process is terminating abnormally." What should I do?

Reapply your Microsoft Service Pack.

Even though I checked the "Save Password" box, my password is gone whenever I restart my computer. What is happening?

This behavior can occur if you are not logged onto Windows®. If you click "Cancel" in the logon dialog box that appears when Windows® is starting, your password cache list file is not open, and your passwords cannot be saved.

To restart Windows® so that you receive the dialog box: If you have Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0® or later installed, click "Start", click "Log Off", then click "Yes". If you do not have Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0® or later installed, click "Start", click "Shut Down", click "Close all programs and log on as a different user", then click "OK".

When I start my computer, I go directly into the WinPoET™ dialer and click "Connect". At first, I get a hardware failure message but then it works, if I wait. What's going on?

The Win PPPoE (Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet) service needs a moment to fully load on your computer.

Is WinPoET™ as secure as my old dial-up connection?

Yes. You will retain the same level of security as a traditional dial-up connection. WinPoET™ will provide you with a new IP address with each high-speed connection.

If Windows® NT is my operating system, can I use WinPoET™?

Yes. Contact Ironton Telephone Company for the latest version.

I understand that WinPoET™ has a Macintosh equivalent called MacPoET™. Which versions of Macintosh does the MacPoET™ product support?

Contact Ironton Telephone Company to verify that support is available for MacPoET™. The minimum system requirements for MacPoET™ are: Mac OS computer equipped with a PowerPC® CPU, Open Transport 1.1.1 or higher and System 7.6 or higher and a CD-ROM drive.

I do not see the WinPoET™ icon in my system tray. How do I make it reappear?

Open the folder in which you installed WinPoET™ (the default location is C:\Program Files\iVasion\WinPoET) and double click on "WinPPPoverEthernet.exe".

When I try to install WinPoET™ on my Windows 98® computer, it says that I must have Dial-Up Networking (DUN) installed. However, when I go to the Control Panel's Add/Remove Programs Properties applet, Windows® Setup tab, and look at the Communications details, I see that the Dial-Up Networking component is already selected. What is the problem?

If DUN was correctly installed at one time and then removed through the Control Panel's Network applet, Windows will still show the DUN component check box as selected. To resolve the discrepancy, clear the check box, restart your computer, go back to the Add/Remove Programs Properties applet, select the check box again, and then restart your computer once more.

When I try to run the Dial-Up Networking (DUN) 1.3 update on my Windows 98® computer, I get a message instructing me to go to the Control Panel. Why do I receive this message?

The DUN update included with WinPoET™ is for Windows 95® users only. DUN 1.3 support is already built into Windows 98®. To enable DUN for Windows 98®, open the Control Panel's Add/Remove Programs Properties applet. On the Windows® Setup tab, go to the Communications details and check the Dial-Up Networking and Microsoft Virtual Private Networking boxes.

I would like to use an analog modem as well as my WinPoET™ connection. Is this option possible?

Yes. However, the DSL connection must be disengaged so that the line can function as a standard telephone line. In addition, users of Windows® 95 will need to install WinPoET™ and a modem. There are no special instructions for users of Windows® 98.

I am trying to connect using Windows® NT and get the error message "Error 692: Hardware failure in port or attached device". What needs to be done?

This situation can occur when you upgrade to a newer version of WinPoET™ on Windows® NT (for example, from 1.4 to 2.0). Just as you add the iVasion PoET Adapter manually with the 1.4 installation, the same must be done while uninstalling. Remove the PoET Adapter manually after uninstallation, then proceed with the new installation. (NOTE: If WinPoET™ is your only "RAS-capable" device, remove the RAS service first. Then proceed to a manual removal of the adapter.)
